Pot Your Own Cabbage Patch Baby

Faux Plant

As a child of the 80s I had many Cabbage Patch baby dolls, but what I didn't have was one growing in it's little cabbage bed.  Every box had a cartoon image of a tiny head poking out from a bundle of leaves and I always wanted one like that soooo badly! Well here we are today and I decided to make one myself, check it out:

Just in case you aren't sure what I'm talking about, here is the image that was found on the Cabbage Patch boxes.  The story was that the dolls were 'born' from magical cabbages and ready for you to adopt.

Here is my baby that I decided to use (one of the "preemies"), an 8 inch plastic pot and some foam to help keep the doll in place.

I used a plastic bag to wrap up the doll to keep it clean.

And tucked it into the pot like this.  Adding in foam around the bottom helped to keep the doll secure.

Using sheet moss I cut pieces and glued/ tucked them in until all of the plastic bag was hidden.  I was careful to glue only to the pot and the plastic bag, not the doll itself.

Next up was to create the cabbage leaf collar.  Using these faux leaves and a rubber band, I tucked them in around the neck of the doll.

Just keep adding and adjusting, working your way around the back of the neck until you like how it all looks.

And that's how I potted my own Cabbage Patch baby 😄
This little baby now happily lives in my garden shed.

  1. I remember the cabbage doll phase. It seemed every kid had one but me. This is such a cute idea! It'd be a fun centerpiece for a baby shower.
