Customize Your Birthday Cake Candles

Make your own custom birthday cake candles

Hello September and hello readers!

In last week's post I shared with you the decor from my Daughter's bakery themed birthday party.  As promised, I'm back today with step-by-step instructions on how to make over birthday cake candles.

When looking at candles this year I couldn't find anything I liked that wouldn't clash with the cake decor.  I decided to purchase a couple of standard candles and then revamp them using paint and sprinkles.  Read on to see how easy it is to customize your own:

Supplies

For this project you will need your numeral candles, glue, paint, and old paintbrush, clear coat spray (not pictured) and the embellishment of your choice.  I used sprinkles, but glitter, sequins, buttons and many other small items will work as well.

Paint

The first step that I took was to paint over the red design (front and back) using  purple acrylic paint.  Once when trying to make a set with gold spray paint, the candles would not dry and smudged even hours later.  Acrylic paint has worked well for me though.

Glue

Once the paint was dry I used a paintbrush to apply white glue to the front of the candles, then added sprinkles.  You may want to use an inexpensive paintbrush like I did so your good brushes aren't ruined with glue 😉

Let Dry & Seal

After letting the glue dry I sprayed both sides of the candles with a clear coat spray.  This helped to keep the sprinkles in place and prevented any moisture damage to the candles from occurring.
