Fall Decor - 2016

Happy Thanksgiving!
Here are a few photos of my fall decor to help mark the holiday:

Pretty Pumpkin

I love the glow of soft lighting during the holidays, it makes the home feel so cozy!  This fall started out with these pumpkins stacked up in the corner.  They were rearranged a bit for Halloween (link below) and now the same pumpkins are tucked underneath the dining room Christmas tree....say what?  I'll explain in a future post 😄

Nothing new or special here, I just really enjoy the look of simple things.

Faux Acorns

These are the acorns that I picked up treasure hunting over the summer.  I simply tossed them into a milk glass pedestal bowl and let them be.

By the way, my milk glass collection has been growing exponentially, but more on that later 😁

Golden Pumpkins

If you remember from last year, I spray painted a few of my orange pumpkins a shiny gold (I did this so that they would look nice with last year's Thanksgiving table).  This year I mixed them in with the remaining orange pumpkins.  I like the contrast and it's inspired me to do a bit more painting 😏

Here is another of the pumpkins that I made up last year.  I am really loving how my decor items and milk glass blend together.

Lighting Examples

These pics aren't all that special other than that I wanted to point out how differently your decorative items can look depending on lighting.  On the top you can see the effect of bright, direct lighting while on the bottom features subdued, indirect lighting.  This is something to keep in mind when planning events or household decor; lighting can change the entire mood!

Ceramic Pumpkins

These are the only fall decor items that I purchased new for this year.  Available at Dollar Tree for $1 each, I selected five different shapes and colors.  Three of them I love as they are, but two of them were purchased just for their shape.  They have since been painted gold (I know, I know, I have a problem 😁), can you guess which two got the makeover?

Milk Glass Lamps

Hello, hello!
Remember my last post where I mentioned my newest venture into the art of thrifting?  Well let me tell you, I am having a blast!

It was during my second trip to the Good Will store when I saw a display of lampshades and remembered that I needed to replace the lamp in our master bedroom.  Our previous lamp was pretty: gold with a cream shade, but beyond repair.  It turns out that lamps can only handle being tipped off of the top shelf so many times before they end up in the trash.  Luckily, the Little Man has learned to climb into our bed now without using my nightstand-bookshelf as a climbing wall :D

Anyway,  so there I was looking at lampshades and wondering if there were any lamps for sale when I turned around a saw......two matching MILK GLASS lamps!!!!  Yayyyy!  A quick text to the Husby to see if the lamps were safe to use (vintage electrical) and we were in business.

Pretty Little Lamp

The lamps were $7 each and needed a bit of attention as well as new shades.

Imperfections

After cleaning the lamps you  could see that the finish was a bit damaged.  No problem, let me just whip out a can of spray paint.  Gold, of course ;)

Tape it Up

Before beginning, it's useful to tape off the areas that you don't want covered in paint.  Since I was using spray paint, I went ahead and covered the remaining areas of exposed glass, but you get the idea.

Fresh & Pretty

Such a difference a little bit of paint can make!

Add a Shade

I picked up the shades at Wal-Mart for $6, that makes two lamps for a total of $26!
(I already had the gold spray paint on hand, so no expense there)

Vintage Glow

I love the way the lamps look at night, so soft and pretty.  They really highlight the climbing wall - I mean nightstand-bookshelf - too, don't you think?!?!

As far as thrifting goes, I'm definitely hooked.  Just a little bit more work on my French china cabinet, and I can share that with you too :)

Treasure Hunting - Fall 2016

I'm here today with a quick treasure hunting wrap-up.  Take a look at a few of the things I found before garage sales ended for the season:

Carved Rose Wall Decor

For $2, I found a set of these carved rose wall brackets.  They are the kind with openings on the sides so that you can hang them at your windows and drape your curtain material through them.  You could also use them as bookends if you wanted.

Chipped Florals

If you look closely, you can see that the finish was chipped revealing some of the white plaster.  This was no big deal to me since I planned on painting them white anyway.....

.....and I love how they turned out.  So fresh, bright and clean!

Artificial Ferns

I found three of these faux ferns for $1 each.  They came in hanging wicker baskets which I removed and tossed out.  I plan on using them as outdoor plants next year, so there is no need to store the bulky baskets.

Decorative Glass Bowl

I already have a bowl like this that sits on top of my microwave, but since this was a $1, I grabbed it too.  You can never have too many pretty dishes ;)

Milk Glass Sugar Bowl & Trinket Box

I thought I was doing really well when I found each of these for a dollar, you know I love adding to my milk glass collection!  But then, because garage sales were dying down, I decided to try 'thrifting'.

Baby Girl and I went to Good Will where..........

..........this happened!!!  :D :D :D

Needless to say, now I'm as hooked on thrifting as I am on treasure hunting.  I've had some really great luck too!  In fact, I'll be back soon with posts about milk glass lamps and a French china cabinet, all from Good Will!
