Bakery Themed Birthday: Party Decor

Bakery Decor

Last saturday we celebrated my daughter's 10th birthday with a bakery themed birthday party.  Come on in and check out the party decor:

Made by the birthday girl herself these signs on the front door welcomed guests to the party.

I'll have a post ready soon where I'll share exactly how we put together these adorable ice creams.

Vintage Fisher Price Food Toys
Dining Table Decor

I have a collection of vintage Fisher Price food toys - mostly baked goods - and we decided to pull a few of them out to use as table centerpieces.  The addition of glassware added elegance to an otherwise casual display.

I'll be posting soon with baking details and a step-by-step tutorial of the customized numeral candles.

In pink, blue and purple, these doughnut topped cupcakes added pops of color to our dessert display.

Not only did I get to play with my old toys, but I got to pull out some of my Jadeite as well 😍
After arranging the pieces into their glass displays, I placed them on top of colorful napkins.  A few sprinkles here and there gave the finishing touch.

I also used some of my cupcake topper printables to dress up the cups that held the flatware.

Treasure Hunting Haul - A Crafter's Dream!

Treasure Hunting Thrifted Crafting Haul

Here it is, the super amazing, super huge crafting supplies thrifting haul that I hinted at recent post!
I had wonderfully good luck one garage sale day and found everything shown here at just two sales.

Check out the goods:

Thrifted Fiskars Cutting Mat & Scoring Tool
Cutting Mat & Scoring Tool

I've been wanting to pick up one of these Fiskars brand cutting mats for a few years now.  But since I'm not a big sewer, (and honestly, I'm not sure how I'll use it 😀) I keep passing it up.  I figure I can better spend the $15 or so that this size mat costs elsewhere, right?  But then I found this one for $2 and now here we are.

The scoring tool was still in it's original package and cost only .25
I don't cut a lot of fabric, but it could maybe help with scoring paper too so I grabbed it as well.
Honestly, I just like tools 😆

Thrifted Curve Set for Painting Detail
Acrylic Curve Set

I've been admiring Pinterest photos of furniture, walls and ceilings lately where this kind of detailing has been added with paint.  I've never seen a 'curve set' before, but what a wonderful collection of stencils!  I imagine that I can use these for paint, fabric, paper projects and all sorts of things.
Though the original store price of $16 was on the back, I picked it up for only a quarter!

Thrifted Craft Supplies From Garage Sales
Ribbon, Buttons & Rhinestones

I'm a firm believer that one can never have too many supplies on hand, especially supplies that normally cost quite a bit more than you were able to snag them for 😉

I was able to grab all of the (unopened) ribbon for .25, the bag of buttons for .50 and the bag of rhinestones for $2.  Not bad at all.

Thrifted Craft Supplies From Garage Sales
Glitter & Embellishments

As you can see from the tags in the picture, all of this came in at a mere $4.
Those glitter bottles are still full and those packages are unopened! 😁

Thrifted Craft Supplies From Garage Sales
Bead Boxes

One of my very favorite craft supplies to find while thrifting are these plastic organizing boxes full of odds and ends.  At $1 apiece these large containers were worth the cost even empty (brand new they are usually around $5 and up depending upon size).  But the best part is getting home and opening them up to find out all of what's inside - It's like a thrifter's Christmas!

And these particular boxes didn't disappoint:

So. Much. Stuff!

Not only were the containers full of beads, sequins and jewelry making hardware, but there were even several already made necklaces and bracelets as well.  My Daughter was quite happy to take those off my hands right away 😉

And that was my best treasure hunting craft haul ever.
I hope you enjoyed this thrifting post, thanks for stopping by!

Recycling Thrifted Frames

Recently I needed to frame a couple of large pieces (one photo, one painting) and wanted to avoid the high cost of standard framing.  Check out my solution of recycling inexpensive thrifted frames:

Here was my first item, a picture of my Husby at work.  I know, I know, he's super cool.....😍

I love this photo of my husband (in action welding some pipe) and had it printed in a 16x20
After looking briefly at Walmart, I saw that a photo frame this size was going to be around $25, unless I went with a lesser quality (read-not as pretty) poster frame for around $6.

My other item was this painting of my daughter that was created by my Grandpa.  I know, I know, he's super....talented 😄

This watercolor is amazing and also pretty big, measuring 12 x 17.5
I didn't even bother pricing frames for the painting because by this point I had an idea.....

Thrifted Frames!

Why not buy super cheap framed art, already furnished with pretty frames, and just swap out the pictures?  Genius!

I found the large sketch at Goodwill for $6.99, but the 50% off color-of-the-week tag brought it down to a mere $3.50!  That very same day, literally on the way to Goodwill, I passed a yard sale and found the framed painting for $2!

If you are keeping track, that's a whopping $5.50 for two very large, sturdy frames.  Yes! 😎

Fresh Paint

After taking the frames apart I gave them a clean coat of gold paint before inserting my photo and painting.  In the interest of total transparency, I'll admit that I was actually out of gold spray paint (the horror!) and had to pick up a new can at $5.  You can go ahead and add that to the project total if you'd like 😉

And here they are all done, not too bad for under $11!

This project worked out so well that I've already added three more large frames to my stockpile.  They were only a dollar apiece at a church sale that I visited yesterday so I snapped them up.  I also found some Jadeite and so many craft items, but I'll have to share that at a later time.

A Faux Book Makeover

Don't you love this set of pretty books that sits on top of the island in my closet room?  Well, they aren't really books and they weren't always pretty either!  Read on to see how I transformed this collection of faux book boxes:

In the Beginning

All of these book boxes were found at Goodwill, a couple here and a couple there.  I've been stashing them away as I found them, waiting until I had a complete 'set' before making them over.  I can't remember the price of the Paris book, but the Amaryllis and both of the Captain Underpants were around $3 each.

Paint

I started with painting the Captain Underpants books in gold, both inside and out.  This was necessary as I didn't like any of the colors or design.  The amaryllis book had a nice velvety interior finish and pretty 'pages' painted on already, so I left that as was, just painting the exterior in a copper color.

Pages

Once the Captain Underpants boxes were dry, I needed to figure out some way to make 'pages'.  I thought I could try painting the edges cream first and then add in details - but ended up stopping after one coat of cream.  Since a single layer wasn't enough to properly cover the gold on it's own, it ended up looking like book pages all by itself.  Let's hear it for serendipity! 😁

Finished 'Books'

I decided to leave the Paris book untouched, as I realized that when stacked together the three books looked pretty good.

Wait, wasn't there four?  Yes, I ended up giving one to my daughter for her bedroom shelf.  She has plans to do hers up in washi tape 😉

All Done!

And here they are again, stacked upon a mirror with a few other pretties that I have collected/ made over the years.  I haven't used the books for storing anything yet, but so far I'm pleased with the look.

If you want to shop my style:

You can find the chocolate candy candles at Amazon.  I purchased mine at Goodwill for $2 for a set of 4 and they are amazing.  A year later and the room still smells like chocolate when you walk in!

Note:  The Roman lady bust statue is no longer available at Walmart (mine was $20)
but I found this similar one from Amazon
