Customize A Thrifted Painting For Halloween Decor

Halloween Decor

I've been seeing examples of people taking old paintings and adding new details to make them completely different pictures.  Sometimes they are funny (think dinosaurs and even aliens) but most of them have been Halloween inspired.  I decided that my dining room mantel could use a Halloween painting and gave the trend a try myself, check it out:

Here is the painting that I started with, only $5 from the thrift store.  I chose this one for fall colors and because I could easily imagine a family of ghosts spending a day at the shore.  What also made this painting suitable for me was the lack of a glass front.  Not only did I not have to mess with taking the frame apart, but it made the painting a lot lighter and easier to move in and out of storage.

To create my ghost family I grabbed a silver Sharpie and drew the ghost shapes.  A black Sharpie detailed the faces of those looking forward and made the swing.  For the clouds I used a sponge brush and a bit of gray acrylic paint.

Note - If your paining doesn't have glass and you want to better protect it, give it a coating of clear sealant spray.

Here is the painting as a whole- a group of ghosts are now enjoying a misty day by the water.
This was such an easy project, just five dollars a couple of permanent markers and some acrylic paint!  And that's my customized Halloween painting.
