As I left off last week I showed you the progress we have made in the backyard, today I'm sharing the side yard:

Exiting the garage is this mishmash of red bricks, poured concrete and rocks that my husband absolutely hates! He's planning to rip all of it up and put in a new surface, either poured or large brick pavers. For now we've thrown down a rug and battle the weeds. This spot is also where we keep the grills and smoker.
I added the window privacy with paint and lace like this.
A little bit further and the rocks end into more meadowscaping; Dutch Clover, Woodland Violets and Creeping Charlie. Even though they don't grow that tall, I've still been using the trimmer to keep things tidy around the berry beds.
I want some sort of raised bed constructed underneath the window so I can plant something that will attract hummingbirds. It would be awesome to make the A/C equipment look a little nicer but I don't want to disrupt the airflow. The cloth pot has new Coneflower plants that I've started for transplanting into the front yard once they are a bit bigger.
The three raised beds contain blueberry, raspberry and blackberry plants. These were started last fall so they haven't produced a whole lot yet, but the plants are coming in nicely. I did learn the importance of putting the fences around them - last winter when the snow was high a rabbit ate one of the blueberry bushes right down to the ground! It's made a healthy comeback though.
Here is the very end of the side yard.
The circular metal bed contains a dwarf cherry tree and flowering Thyme plants. I debated here whether or not to dig out the ground and put the beds perfectly level, or leave them gently sloping. I decided to stick with the slope to keep as much rainfall away from the house and foundation as possible. The visual bugs me a bit but I feel like it's better in the long run!
The white bin is a rain barrel that is sitting there temporarily, and the vine in the lower left is a cucumber from the vegetable patch gone wild!
If you took the same walk but looked to the other side, you would see the strawberry bed and the vegetable garden. Husby wants to extend the patio up to the berry patch and replace these red bricks with something more attractive.
Here are some posts I have about the decorative items:
And just past the strawberry patch is the vegetable garden. This year my husband has zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, brussel sprouts, okra, beets, carrots, onions....
Here is a post showing how I made the hanging garden signs.
