Fall SVG Giveaway

SVG Giveaway

It's time for another giveaway opportunity and since I've been working on several seasonal SVG files, (think pumpkins, leaves and cozy nights) I thought I would share a few!  SVG files are great for using with Cricut and other cutting machines.  Just upload the file to your design program and cut to create custom artwork, clothing, pillows, mugs, stickers and more.

Want to learn more about Cricut cutting machines and projects?
Visit JenniferMaker.com  She has an amazing blog full of tutorials, project ideas, workbooks, classes and more.  In fact, it was with her Cut Above SVG Design workbook where I learned how to make SVG files myself 😉

Halloween Eyeball Plant

Dollar Store Decor

Halloween is near and I can't help but to keep adding to my spooky decor!
After being inspired by this creative post that I found on Pinterest:

I decided to make my own version of the
Halloween eyeball plant, check it out:
(I'm loving the potted bones and carnivorous bush, I may have to make those next 😊)

Dollar Store Decor

I started with a faux plant that I already had.  I chose this one because the scrubby condensed shape would make gluing the flowers in easy, and I liked how the terra cotta color would match the roses that I planned to use.

Dollar Store Decor

For the eyeballs I used a package of plastic eyes that I bought at Dollar Tree.  These come all blue with red irritation around the iris.  I wanted a mix of brown and blue for my plant, and didn't want the dry eye look, so I changed them up a bit.  Just grab some permanent markers (I used Crayola), flip over the eye and draw a new iris and pupil in the color that you want.

After purchasing a bunch of orange fabric roses, also from Dollar Tree, I pulled off the blooms and glued the newly colored eyeballs into place.

Dollar Store Decor

After that it was a simple as gluing the flowers into the plant.
And there you have it, a creepy but fun Halloween eyeball plant!

DIY Harry Potter Spell Books

Halloween Decor

I love decorating for Halloween!
After making my own set of Harry Potter inspired Halloween potions, I thought I should probably have some spell books to go along with them.  I mean, how can you create anything worthwhile without instructions, am I right? 😁

Here is how easy it is to create your own:

Cardboard Book Boxes

I started my project by purchasing blank cardboard books, ready to customize.
I want to say these were $1.99, $2.49 and $2.99 (depending upon size) and I found them at Hobby Lobby.  I like them because they are lightweight and easy to store, plus you can tuck some of your breakables away inside if you want 😎

Apple Barrel & Folk Art Paints

I chose to paint my books using a collection of acrylic paint colors that would blend nicely, were fall inspired and went with my overall household decor.

Here are the shades I chose:

Antique White (for the pages)
Metallic Pure Gold
Metallic Rose Gold
Metallic Antique Copper
Territorial Beige
Melted Chocolate
Jet Black

  Pages

I first used the antique white to paint out the 'pages' of the books.  Instead of aiming for a complete, solid coat, allow the brush strokes to show.  If you do it right, it helps give the illusion of sheets of stacked paper.

Prettily Painted

With my pages dry, I painted my covers in two sets; a stack of flat and a stack of metallic.  I like to think of how I'm going to display my items when choosing what colors to put where, and had already decided to have them scattered piles.

Halloween Decor

Using Microsoft Word I created and printed the labels you see above.  I separated them into two groups, putting the general potion books on the metallic painted books and the spookier titles on the darker colored books.

(Here is a post from Just A Girl And Here Blog where you can learn to make your own labels)

In case you can't read the labels well, here are my titles:

Confronting the Faceless
The Dark Forces:  A Guide to Self Protection
Death Omens - What to do When the Worst is Coming

Potions & Brews
Magical Drafts & Potions
Advanced Potion Making

*All of these titles are from the Harry Potter book series*

Halloween Decor

Using Mod Podge, I painted the books, stuck the cut out labels in place and then painted over them again.  Once dry they made an adorable spooky addition to my Halloween decor!

DIY Blanket Scarf From Fabric Remnants

DIY Blanket Scarf

I can't stand being cold, and who doesn't want to wear a cozy blanket all day?
I know I sure do, so when I saw a tutorial on Pinterest explaining how to make a blanket scarf, I was all for it!

Here are the tutorials that I used -
I completely forgot to take photos while making the headband 😣, but you can get all of the information here:

While I followed the tutorials nearly perfectly, I did add my little twist by using fabric that I found in the remnant section of Walmart.
Check it out:

DIY Blanket Scarf

Not being a big sewing type of person, I was wandering around the fabric section of Walmart wondering if this was a project that I could even pull off...and I found the remnant section!  Who knew?  An entire area of pre-cut discounted fabrics!  Ok, ok, sewing people know about this, I'm sure, but it was news to me 😄

Not only was the fabric at a great price (each of these bundles was $4), but I was able to find thick cozy fabrics in fall appropriate colors.  Armed with the confidence of scoring a great deal, I bought three different kinds.

*Note - I did choose fabrics that were nice on both sides, meaning I could get away with a simple hemming of the edges.  That way I could avoid having to double up the fabric, making the scarves too bulky.

DIY Blanket Scarf

So what does a novice do when she needs to measure and cut?  She spreads everything out on the kitchen floor, of course!  I'm totally professional over here...

Following the scarf tutorial, I cut 2 Yards at 44" wide.

DIY Blanket Scarf

I did use a laser level to help me cut in straight lines.  Intended for measuring with walls, I use this tool for cutting paper and fabric, as well as helping me to line up my vinyl when pressing shirts.

You can click here to find this level on Amazon.

*Note - Working on the kitchen floor, you can see one of my rugs in the photos.  Don't actually cut your fabric with anything underneath like this as it could throw off your measurements 😉

DIY Blanket Scarf

After cutting my fabric in the recommended measurements, I added a simple hem around the edges and was ready to go!  A warm, cozy blanket scarf, just like that!
