Artist Spotlight: Dezi Cakes

Artificial Decorative Baked Goods

You all know by now that I have a special fondness for artificial baked goods (totally normal 😆) and I love adding to my collection.  Well last summer, I stumbled upon an artist known as Dezi Cakes while browsing through Ebay.  I quickly became obsessed with the variety of products and decided that the smartest way to add to my decorative collection would be to use them for business mock-up photos first.  Very clever, right? 😎

So after buying a few myself, and receiving others for my birthday/ anniversary/ Christmas, I've managed to pull together quite a collection.  I even got a cake and milkshake (thanks Mom!💗).

Having the artificial cupcakes has made my graphic design work more manageable, but I also just plain love them.  So much in fact that I decided to write this post, and tell everyone about

If you keep scrolling you will see pictures of my cupcake collection but first a little Q & A:

Using Mock-ups
What's a mock-up???

In the digital sales/ graphic design world, a mock-up is a photo of any item that you would personalize with your product.  So if I'm selling cupcake topper printables, a mock-up for me would be a shot of two or three cupcakes with a nice, clean background.  Once my printables have been created, I can take the mock-up photo and combine it with images of my printables to show potential customers exactly how the printables would look in use.

But why?

Because using a mock-up is soooooo much easier!  I used to actually bake or buy cupcakes, drag out all of my photography lights and equipment, print, cut and assemble all of my toppers, add them to the cupcakes and take the photos.  Then of course there was the clean up followed by the photo editing.  The whole process would take about a day's worth of time too.

I used to think about how if I had a set of mock-up cupcake photos, the job would be a lot less work. But I didn't want to purchase someone else's mock-ups and have my shop look like it belonged to another designer.  Finally it hit me - I could be making my own mock-ups while adding to my collection of artificial baked goods at the same time 😎

(Like those cupcake toppers in the photo above? You can visit my Etsy shop here)

Now let's take a look at some of those cupcakes:

Aren't they gorgeous?  And this is just a small sample of the products available.  I've got my eye on a few more cupcakes, cakes, milkshakes and the chocolate dipped strawberries too!

As pretty as they are, it doesn't stop there- The items are light weight, come packaged well, are composed of quality materials and ship quickly.  I would be careful to keep them out of direct sunlight and away from water though, just to be safe.

How I Styled and Organized My Cricut Maker Storage Cart

I was lucky to score a rose colored Cricut Maker during the black Friday sales this year and have been having sooooo much fun designing and cutting.  The only problem for me was that without a designated storage area, I was keeping the machine in the box.  It was safe and everything, but a pain to get out and set up!  I finally figured that if I had some sort of cart (on wheels) for the machine, tools and accessories, it would be so much more convenient.  Read on to see the cart that I chose as well as how I organized the drawers and made it pretty:

Here is the stock photo of the cart which I ordered online from WalMart.  It's currently available in white or black, with silver looking (plastic) drawer pulls.  I was expecting the drawers to be solid white in color, but they are actually more transparent.  This was no big deal for me since I planned on lining the drawers with felt and wanted a bit of the color to show through anyway, but I thought I should mention it 😉

The cart is very sturdy, has lots of storage space and rolls easily even on carpeted floors.

You can order your own cart by clicking here

Cricut Cart Storage Space
Plenty of Surface

The most important requirement of the cart was that I had plenty of space to hold the machine.  And it does!  I tend to keep the (very heavy) maker positioned more toward the back where the frame of the cart allows more support, but it can go in the middle as well.

Organizational Labels for my Cricut Cart
Labeled Drawers

OK, so here's my thing about the labels - I thought about doing them in vinyl because hey, I got a Cricut!  But I like to change things around and wanted more flexibility.  I decided on using post-its because they are already sticky, easy to remove and available in pretty pink.  I did go ahead and use the Cricut pen and had the machine draw out the font 😎

I organized my drawers this way:

Left Side (shallow drawers) -
Cords
Machine Tools (quick swap blades and such)
Cutting Tools (scissors, craft knives, blades)
Application (brayer, scrapers, painter's tape)
Weeding Tools
Weeding Help (baby powder, lint roller)
Pens
Removable Scraps
Permanent Scraps
Iron On Scraps

Right Side (deep drawers)-
Infusable Ink
Transfer Tape
Removable Vinyl
Permanent Vinyl
Iron On Vinyl

Drawer Organization for my Cricut Cart
Felt & Baskets

I mentioned earlier that I like the color of felt as a drawer liners, but I also like the way it keeps things from sliding around.  I decided to go with baby pink and golden cashmere, and alternated the colors for each drawer.  The baskets are from Dollar Tree and come in three different sizes.

How I Embellished My Cricut Storage Cart
Drawer Embellishments

Remember those silver colored drawer pulls?  Because the drawers move easily without a pull, and I'm not a silver person, I decided to add embellishments instead.  A gold medallion combined with a pink seed pearl and a bit of hot glue did the trick 😍

Side Mat Storage

So we've got plenty of storage space for our tools and accessories, but what about those big awkward  mats?  I used super glue to attach plastic hooks to the sides of the cart, then hung my cutting mats and acrylic rulers with the help of cable tie loops.

Back Mat Storage

For the machine mats I used another cable tie to attach an S hook to the back of the cart's frame.  Currently, I have 7 cutting mats hanging here with no problem.

Super Mario Birthday - Party Invitations

Super Mario Birthday

Welcome back for the first post of 2020, I hope everyone had a nice holiday break!

I had a wonderful time celebrating, relaxing and getting a head start on my spring cleaning.  I've also started to prepare for my son's upcoming 6th birthday party which as you can see, will be themed after Super Mario Brothers.

I've been working with a few different graphic design programs lately (Cricut Design Space and Inkscape are my favorites 😉), but every once in awhile I still like to turn to good old Microsoft Word and I did so for the invitations shown above.  You just can't beat a nice, simple program, am I right?
So today I'm going to show you how you can make up your own:

Super Mario Birthday Party

After opening a new Word Document, I clicked 'insert' then 'picture' to choose an image from my files to use.  Run your cursor over the dots at the edge of the image to click and drag for adjustment of size.

Where did I get the picture?  A Google search of 'Free Super Mario Image' turned up quite a selection for me, but Pinterest works as well.

Super Mario Birthday Party

With my image in place I dressed it up a bit by adding a border in black.  Just click 'format' then 'picture border' to adjust the weight and color.  I like to use a heavy weight, which creates a thicker line.

Once my photo was to my liking, I then added a shape to serve as the background for my text.  Click 'insert' then 'shape' and choose the shape of your liking.  I went with a plaque design.

Super Mario Birthday Party

I adjusted the settings for my shape as well.  You do this by highlighting the shape and clicking 'format' then 'shape border' to adjust your shape (just like you did for your picture).

I left my shape with a white center, but you can alter the color by clicking 'format' then 'shape fill' and selecting a new shade.

If you want to move the shape around, just click and drag.  You can also adjust the size by clicking, then dragging the nodes (little square dots) at the sides.

Super Mario Birthday Party

With the shape in place and styled as you like, it's now time to add a text box.  Just click 'insert' then  'text box' then 'draw text box'.  Use your cursor to drag the box into the shape that you want. by clicking on the nodes or move the entire shape by clicking and dragging from the center.  Don't worry about the unsightly outline yet, you can remove that in a bit.  just concentrate on your text right now.

Super Mario Birthday Party

Type out your text and select the font(s), font size and text color(s) that you want.  Once you are happy with your text, highlight the text box and go to 'format' then 'shape outline' to remove the text box outline.  If you chose for your background shape to be another color, then your text box now appears white on top of the shape.  This can be adjusted by clicking the text box, selecting 'format' then 'shape fill' and selecting 'no fill'.  Your text box should now be transparent.

Note:  My invitations don't actually have the weird rectangles over the text, those are just for privacy concerns- but you get the idea 😀

And there you go, a cute and easy party invitation that you can print out or share electronically!
