DIY Garden Labels

I wanted to make some labels for the various berries, vegetables and herbs in our garden and decided to do so using my Cricut and kitchen accessories, check it out:

From Dollar Tree I purchases a few spatulas, a precut metal sign and a couple packages of canning lids. From the thrift store I picked up a stack of ceramic plates for less than $5.

Using my Cricut I cut the labels that I wanted in permanent vinyl. The Herb labels I whipped up really quickly in Design Space (just text and a simple leaf image) but for the vegetable labels I used this SVG bundle and for the strawberry patch I used this one.

For my herb garden I applied labels to the spatulas, and for the strawberry patch I used the metal sign.

My garden labels I applied to the canning jar lids and then used E6000 industrial strength glue to attach them to the backs of the ceramic plates. I made sure to apply the glue all around the canning lids so that there wouldn't be any opening for water to collect between the lids and the plates.

Aren't they cute!?

Here is how they all look out in the garden.

I love how they turned out and they have held up well in the heat, direct sunlight and watering.

Cricut On The Rooftop!

Of all the places to use your Cricut, have you considered the rooftop? We repainted our peachy orange brick with a cool, bluish gray and since the chimney is brick, that required a climb up on the roof. It's a huge chimney with a gradual roof slope that flattens out into a large place perfect for sitting. I couldn't help but imagine who might sit up there from time to time and came up with Peter Pan and Santa Clause. Wouldn't it be funny if they tagged the chimney with their signatures? Once the painting was all done I got out my Cricut and got to work, check it out:

Here are the signatures that I cut in permanent vinyl. I simply Google searched images for names of the characters and downloaded them to my pc. Then I uploaded those images into Cricut's Design Space and cut.

I weeded the designs and added the transfer tape before climbing back up.

I placed the stickers towards the back of the house at a level that's high enough to easily see if you have to be on the roof, but not visible from the ground.

Here is a selfie next to the signatures, it gives you a better idea of how big the chimney is. Since the stickers can't be seen from the ground, nobody knows they are here, but it makes me giggle that I know and that's good enough!

My Large -Faux- Chocolate Cake

I wanted to make a large faux chocolate cake and decided to do so using Styrofoam and spackle. Read on to see how you can make one as well:

I had some sheets of styrofoam that came from a shipping box and used a large plate to trace out a circle.

Using a serrated knife I cut out four of the circles and hot glued them together. Once they were firmly attached I used the knife again to go over the uneven edges, trimming here and there until the cake form was smooth.

A coating of light weight spackle all over the cake gives the look of icing. You can see that a small crack appeared at the center of the cake at the top. If this happens to you, you can try to add a little bit of water to smooth it out or go over it with some more spackle. Since I planned on adding a topping that will cover it up, I didn't attempt to fix it.

Once the spackle had fully cured I painted it with a chocolate looking brown acrylic paint.

Using more spackle, I dolloped a bit on top to look like cream and stuck in some of these faux strawberries. Then with brown puffy paint I drizzled on the chocolate sauce.

And here is how the cake looked once finished. You can tell how big it is by looking at the white cake stand as it's meant to me used with standard sized cakes. The gold plates are actually chargers, so they are much bigger than dinner plates.
