Fake Bake Cookie House

After finding a gingerbread house cutter set at the thrift store, I decided to put together a fake bake cookie house. Check it out:

In case you need it, this post will walk you through the salt dough recipe that I use.

Here is the cutter set that I found for less than $5. It's pretty large with pieces for the roof, sides and front/back of the house. I kept forgetting which rectangles were for the roof or sides, so I used a permanent marker to label them.

Here are the shapes all cut out and baked. I can't remember what happened to make that mark on the lower left rectangle, but it's ok because the imperfection can be turned towards the inside of the house.

I also cut out a few circles to decorate the roof with. I wanted it to look like there were cookies on the top 😊

Using a cinnamon colored acrylic paint I added a bit to water to make a wash. Once lightly painted on the the house pieces, they take on a pretty golden brown color.

When everything was I dry I started hot gluing the pieces together.

You can see that the baked pieces don't always come out true to size. Add extra glue at the joints to fill out the gaps and make your house as square as possible. Don't worry about how the exposed glue looks because it will be covered up later.

You can see that I have lots of glue showing, no big deal!

After adding the roof I used a chocolate acrylic paint to mark the door and windows.

White puffy paint was perfect for the detailing.

Remember those cookie cut-outs that I mentioned? After painting a bit of 'chocolate' in their centers I glued them to the roof.

For the icing you want to use lightweight joint compound in a piping bag. I was out of lightweight and I thought I could substitute with another variety that goes on pink and dries white. Here it looks ok as I had just applied it, but when I came back later it was a bit messy. Any place that gravity affected the 'icing' it ended up drooping a little.

I had some leftover chocolate chunk pieces (clay) that I added to the still wet joint compound.

Here is the house all dry, you can see where the icing slipped a little in the front. If this happens and you really hate it, you can gently pick off the dried compound and reapply. I decided to roll with it for now, as a perfectionist I am not 😆
