Salt Dough Mini Pies

 Fake Bakes

Last week when I shared my salt dough Pop-Tarts, I mentioned that I also had some salt dough mini pies, check them out:

Fake Bakes

I found this set of mini pie molds at the thrift store for a couple of dollars.

Fake Bakes

The top photo shows you how they open, allowing you to fill your pie.  The bottom photo shows you how they also serve as pie crust cutters, with one side featuring a decorative design.  The design allows you to make a pretty top crust.

For a real pie you would make two crust shapes, one with the decorative cut-outs.  You would then place the bottom crust into the mold, add filling, put the top crust on as well and then close the mold to crimp everything together.

Because I'm making a fake bake, there is no need to worry about filling.  I can use one handful of salt dough for the entire pie and add the 'filling' with paint a little later 😉

Fake Bakes

Here is where I put the handful of salt dough inside the mold and closed to get the shape right.  Any excess I trimmed off with a butter knife and then smoothed the edges.

(This post contains my salt dough recipe and baking instructions)

Fake Bakes

Once I had my pie shape, I removed it from the mold, flipped the mold over and used the cutter side to press the decorative shapes onto the top of the pie.

Fake Bakes

It ended up looking like this.

Fake Bakes

Some of the dough darkened a bit during the baking process.  I decided that was ok 😆

Fake Bakes

With a bit of acrylic paint mixed with water, I made a wash to darken the pies.  Make sure your dough is completely dry before painting on with a brush, and then let fully dry again before moving on.

Fake Bakes

Here is how they look with a golden glow.  Still a little 'burned' but that's ok.  If you have burned spots that you don't want to keep, gently scrap them off before applying your wash.

My pie filling was puffy paint in purple, red and blue.

After letting the puffy paint dry over night, I applied spray adhesive and sprinkled some baby powder 'powdered sugar'.

Fake Bakes

I added these mini pies in my pie and pudding cabinet, which you can see here.

Salt Dough Pop-Tarts

 Fake Food

Today I'm sharing how I used a mini pie mold to make these faux salt dough Pop-Tarts, check it out:

Fake Food

Here is how the mini pie mold looks, with the cut-outs showing.  You use this side to make the top crust of your mini pie, then open it up, add a bottom crust and filling, place the top crust cut-out on top and squish it together.

Fake Food

I thought the overall shape of the mold looked a little like a Pop-Tart, so I flipped it over to the non cut-out side.

Fake Food

Here is how the cut dough looked like.  Using plenty of flour helps to keep your dough from sticking to the counter, cutter and your hands!

Fake Food

I baked the shapes at 250 for a couple of hours until they were nice and dry.  You can see a mini pie shape in this photo as well, I'll have that post available soon 😉

Fake Food

Using cinnamon colored acrylic paint mixed with water I created a wash to give my tarts a golden baked look.

Fake Food

Here you can see the difference that the color wash makes, with the tarts on the left being a richer, golden color.

Fake Food

To create the look of icing I selected acrylic paint in; Territorial Beige, Melted Chocolate, Antique White and Princess Pink.

Fake Food

For sprinkles I pulled these from my craft storage.

Fake Food

I separated out the sprinkle colors I wanted before applying the Mod Podge.

Fake Food

Once ready, I used a paint brush to apply a thick layer of the Mod Podge.

Fake Food

And then placed the sprinkles by hand.

Fake Food

I gave each tart a coating of spray glue as well, to make sure that the sprinkles stayed securely in place.

Here is how they all turned out:

Fake Food

Cinnamon (Territorial Beige)

Fake Food

Strawberry (Princess Pink)

Fake Food

Chocolate (Melted Chocolate)

Fake Food

Vanilla (Antique White)

Fake Food

I love how they look all stacked together, and put them into my breakfast cabinet.

And that's how I made my salt dough Pop Tarts!
