Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Christmas Ornaments

Today I'm going to show you how simple it is to create cute and affordable tree ornaments from Dollar Tree key chains.

We have a tradition in our home where every year each family member gets a new ornament for the Christmas Tree.  A couple of weeks ago when my son and I were in Hobby Lobby, we decided to browse through their display of holiday ornaments to start getting ideas.

My boy is a big time Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (TMNT) fan, so when he saw TMNT ornaments, he was really excited.  They were really nice and really cute, but at $8 a pop (and each character sold separately) we were talking $32 for ornaments for one person.

Now that's a little more than I'd like to spend and I remembered that Dollar Tree has TMNT key chains for only $1 per character.  I asked my Bub if he thought it would be ok to make our own and he was on board. So here you have it: a super simple key-chain-turned-tree-ornament tutorial:

 Dollar Tree Key Chains

Here you have the TMNT characters in all of their key chain glory (I was going to get a photo of them still in their boxes but somebody opened everything up right away in his excitement 😃)

They are a bit smaller than the Hobby Lobby ornaments, and plastic as opposed to glass, but I think they will do just fine.

Supplies

All you need for this project are your key chains, a pair of scissors and some ribbon.
(I already had my ribbon on hand, so this project came in at just $4 for me)

Bonus

Can you believe that these particular key chains are connected to the ornament with a lobster claw mechanism?  Not only is it a simple task to unhook the claw, but it also leaves you with an unblemished key chain/ lobster claw set that you can use elsewhere.  Yay!

Unhook

Raphael is now free from his chain 😊

Cut the Ribbon

I cut my ribbon into sections about 4 inches in length.
I like to go a little longer than needed (to make tying easier) and then trim any excess.

Attach

Loop your ribbon through the eye hooks, tie off and you are done!  This entire project took me less than 10 minutes - and that includes time spent making a decision on which ribbon to use 😌
