Fairy Houses

Garden Decor

In a miscellaneous bin in my craft room I had an assortment of tiny houses, flowers and accessories.  I decided to take them outside and decorate the flower beds a bit, take a look:

This bed is planted with pink flowering thyme so I decided to add a couple houses with pink details.  The houses are Christmas village houses that I repainted in spring colors and sealed with clear coat.  Also included are a couple of bottle brush trees, bundles of mini roses, a woodcutting stepping path and a couple of village accessories (arch and topiary).

In another spot I placed this thrifted house and tree.  The roses are more from my craft stash but the little figurines and mushrooms can be found at Dollar Tree.  The pathway is a fence that I turned sideways.

In another bed I tucked these slightly smaller houses, also thrifted.  Another bottle brush tree found its way here as well as some Dollar Tree blue toadstools.

This yard has a lot of stumps that I'm camouflaging with flower beds, I also made up some larger faux mushrooms that you can see in this post.

Remember the these little garden houses that I made up for the strawberry patch?  I gave them some attention too, with another woodcutting path and a few rose bundles.  This post will show you how I made the painted rocks.

And that's how I dressed up my garden beds 😍

LED Firefly Jar

Summer Decor

Did you ever collect fireflies as a kid and keep them in jars?  I wanted that kind of nostalgic decor without the bugs, so I made some with LED lights!  Check it out:

Summer Decor

I found this large plastic jar at the thrift store for $1.99.  I chose white plastic because I wanted the color of the 'fireflies' to show through, but not the LED light strand itself.

Here are the lights that I found, also $1.99 at the thrift store.  These are intended for Christmas so the shapes are little evergreen trees.  I chose them for their bright green color and because my jar is not see through, it won't matter.

There are all kinds of colors of these lights available, even rainbow.  A quick Amazon search will find you a multitude of options!

Summer Decor

I attached the battery pack to the inside of the lid using a bit of super glue and some tape.  Make sure to position the battery container so that the lid of the jar can still open/ close and that you can still change the batteries when needed.

Summer Decor

Here is how the lights look inside the jar.  I liked how it was going, but felt that a cute sticker would would dress it up.

(You can take a tour of my craft room here)

Using my Cricut and some gold sticker vinyl I made a label and stuck it on.

And that's how I made my faux jar of fireflies!

DIY Yard Mushrooms

Garden Decor

I have a spot in my yard where we will be removing an old stump, filling in with soil and planting some flowers.  Until that can be finished though, I decided to dress up the area with some faux mushroom decor.

With a collection of milk glass vases sitting in storage I knew I had good stems, but needed to find the tops - so off to the thrift store I went! Read on to see how I used some old pans to finish the project:

I was able to find these pans in various sizes and shapes.  The flat bottomed pans are the easiest to glue to your vases, but the rounded pans can work as well.  You might have to play around with the  different pans/ vases until you get everything to match up well.

If the pans are in brand new condition they should take spray paint pretty well.  If they have been baked in though, they might have a bit of oily residue.  This will prevent your paint from sticking if left in place so give everything a good cleaning (and maybe even a sanding) before adding paint.

Garden Decor

I used a multi-surface spray paint to make the pans a solid red.

Garden Decor

Using acrylic and a small brush, I hand painted on the circles and then coated everything with a clearcoat.  Acrylic paint isn't going to hold up outside on it's own, so the clearcoat was a must.

Once everything was dry I used E6000 industrial strength glue to attach the pans to the tops of the vases.  Remember, you may need to play around with which pans can rest comfortably on top of which vases in order to get a good fit.  Some pans may be top heavy for a particular vase and cause it to be unsteady, but you could fill your vase with something heavy to stabilize it.  Another thing to consider is wind - lower vases will be less likely to get knocked around while taller ones may need to be firmly secured.  If you notice in the picture, I wedged my tall skinny vase into the stump to keep in from tipping over 😁

And that's how I made DIY yard mushrooms!
