Fixing up Barbie Furniture

 Vintage Toys

Last week I shared the vintage Barbie house that I decided to bring down from my attic.  Here is how I fixed up the furniture and parts of the house:

The original TV, refrigerator and stove/ oven were included with the house, but were missing their stickers.  The bed was missing the mattress so I replaced it with a bit of purple craft foam.

Vintage Toys

The TV was an easy fix as I just painted the screen black with acrylic paint.

Vintage Toys

The stovetop took a bit more work.  I first painted the burners and clock black, then measured them for size

Vintage Toys

Using Cricut's Design Space, I made up a few images and then cut them in sticker vinyl.  I chose a purple color that went with the utensils

(This photo shows the burners and clock for the stove, as well an an ice maker decal for the refrigerator)

Vintage Toys

Here is the stove/ oven before and after, such an improvement!

And here is the fridge with an ice maker decal. I painted the ice maker background and door handles in black.

Vintage Toys

In addition to fixing up the furniture, I also wanted to decorate the house a bit and printed these photos.  The larger ones I just liked and thought they would make fun posters, but the tiny ones are all Barbies that I had in the 80s.  I thought they could be like pictures of friends on the fridge, or fashion inspiration on the door of the closet

The photos include; Crystal Barbie, Work Out Barbie, Island Fun Barbie, Tropical Barbie and Funtime Barbie (mine was the pink one).

Vintage Toys

Using the same color vinyl as the decals, I made backgrounds for the pictures and hot glued them on top.

Vintage Toys

Aren't they cute on the fridge?

Vintage Toys

Here is a good before and after of the fridge.

Vintage Toys

The rest of the photos I put on the closet door upstairs.

Vintage Toys

The posters I put inside the closet.  I like them, but didn't want to commit to having them as part of the overall decor of the house 😄

Lastly, I fixed up the flower boxes.  Rather than leaving them white I painted the tops green.  I also trimmed the plants to different heights and hot glued them in place so that they look more tidy.

And that's how I fixed up the Barbie furniture and decor.

Bringing out the Barbie Dream House

 Toy Collection

During a trip to Goodwill I came across the exact same Barbie house that I had in the 80s for only $40, complete with furniture!  For quite awhile I kept it stored in the attic, but decided to finally bring it out.  Read on to learn more:

Toy Collection

I was inspired by my blogger friend Deb Barna and her dollhouse, Nelson Crest. Deb routinely features her house as part of her decor, which means she gets to enjoy it.  I wanted to start enjoying my Barbie house too, so I pulled it down from storage.

After a good cleaning, I fixed up the window boxes by first painting the planting surfaces green.  I then cut and trimmed the flowers so that they fit better and hot glued them in place.  I also added bits of extra greenery to fill out the look.  As I mentioned furniture came with the purchase as well, but I'll get to that in an upcoming post 😊

I planned to keep the house in my enclosed back porch, but didn't like it sitting directly on the floor.  I needed something to rise it up and provide more storage, so off to the thrift store I went.
I found this TV shelf  for 7.99 and knew it would be perfect after a little attention.

Want to know more about Deb's Nelson Crest?  Check out these posts:

You can see in the close-ups that the surface of the shelf was quite damaged, but I planned to sand and paint anyway.

Toy Collection

I painted the shelf in a fresh, clean white.  The top still shows a bit of damage even through the paint, but that will be covered by the Barbie House.

Toy Collection

The cubbies of the shelf are perfectly sized to fit the pool and ice cream shop that I also have...stay tuned!

Here is the house all cleaned and at home on the new shelf, ready for furniture and accessories.

Upgrading the Faux Snack Cabinet

Fake Bakes

In our family room is a "snack cabinet" where I keep my collection of lunch/dinner and snack type fake bakes.  I had been wanting to upgrade the cabinet for awhile when I finally found the piece that would work perfectly, check it out:

Fake Bakes

Here is the cabinet before, a bookshelf with picture frames attached to make it enclosed.  The frames didn't quite cover the opening so a length of ribbon kept out the dust.  The shelf worked to keep everything in place and clean while I kept my eye out for another option.

Fake Bakes

I took a photo after removing the frames so you could see inside better,
this post will give you more of a tour.

Fake Bakes

At one of my trips to the local thrift store I found this cabinet for $40.  The height, width and depth of the top part were perfect and I liked that it had actual glass doors.

Fake Bakes

Another bonus?  The top glass cabinet could easily be separated from the bottom drawer set.  Though it was lovely together, it was too tall for what I wanted.

Fake Bakes

It took a little doing, but I was able to remove the top from the drawers.  The wide, flat base makes it perfect to sit on the floor without having to vacuum underneath every week 😉

I didn't need the drawers for anything, so I put those out next to our curb as a freebie for whoever wanted them.

Fake Bakes

After cleaning, sanding and painting, I moved the new piece into place. It already looks better!

Fake Bakes

Here it is with the door reattached and everything in place.  I like that it is both wider and taller, as well as sturdier looking.  And that's how I upgraded my faux snack cabinet!
