Create Your Own 4th of July Accessories

Independence Day

Wanting to make up a few 4th of July wearable accessories?
A couple of years ago my kids, nieces and I made up a few patriotic florals that were fun to wear.
Read on to see how we created both hair ties/ corsages and an adorable hat:

We started our project with these faux carnations from Dollar Tree.  At just $1 a stem they are super affordable for craft projects....especially those in which you will be covering them with paint 😉

You can click here to browse Dollar Tree's online selection of artificial florals.

After removing the floral heads from the stems, we dipped them in acrylic paint.
(Hang on to the leaves from the bushes, you'll want those in a bit)

We got creative with our painting combining colors in a
half and half style on some and overlaying the two colors on others.

When your paint is dry, grab a ponytail holder and glue to the center of the back.  Then take one of those leaves that I mentioned (you may need to trim it to size) and glue it on top.  This both helps to anchor the ponytail holder in place and gives it a finished look.  These can be worn as hair accessories or wrist corsages.

You can alter this to make a traditional boutonniere as well.  Just skip on the ponytail holder, add the leaf so that it shows artfully from the front and attach to a shirt with a pin.
*Since I was working with younger children, I opted for a safety pin as opposed to a straight floral pin.

Our remaining flowers we grouped and hot glued into place onto a sunhat.
leaves were used here as well, adding the look of foliage to the composition.

Here is how the hat turned out, isn't adorable?

  1. I always love when someone makes something for under $5.00 and I'm sure you were lower than that...mount the grouping on a ribbon...and you can change your hat's look at a whim...grins, very cute. Sandi
