Vintage Thrifted Finds - Rose Petal Place

When I was little I had the daffodil doll from the Rose Petal Place collection. I loved her a lot, but I really, really wanted the rose one. Guess who I found at the thrift store?! Read on to see more:

Rose Petal Place was a movie from 1984 in which a girl who had to move was sad to leave her garden. When she cried and her tears fell upon the flowers, they came alive! I never actually saw the movie, but I enjoyed playing with my daffodil doll 😊

I was browsing through the thrift store when I saw this bag misplaced in the home decor section. I couldn't believe that I had found my Rose, and for only $2.99! Iris was an awesome bonus!

Inside the bag were Iris and Rose, a little grubby but complete with accessories.

Into a bath they went and were laid out to dry.

Here they are all clean and fresh, don't they look lovely?

Here is a close-up of Rose. The rhinestone teardrop jewels were one of my favorite parts of the dolls design.

And a close up of Iris as well.

The girls are now tucked away with a few other vintage toys that I've collected. Maybe I should share what else I have in these bins?

Driveway Makeover

We recently graveled the entire area next to our driveway, take a look at the before and after:

Here is the before - we have a two car driveway and this rocky area was to the side. Not only did it constantly overgrow with weeds, but it had become a catchall for miscellaneous items while we worked on other projects. In other words, it was a mess!

We also wanted to be able to add a shed here and provide more parking off of the street, so graveling it in made sense.

We began by clearing everything out and putting down weed barrier. This picture is partway through.

If you look carefully in the upper right, you will notice a small black circle. A honeysuckle vine was growing here and I didn't want to lose it.

The vine is well established and provides so many blooms during the summer. I wanted to protect it without making a large 'hole' in the gravel. I thrifted a springform pan (the kind you make cheesecake with), removed the bottom and sprayed the rounded sides black. This gave me a metal garden pot that secures the plant and allows it to grow through the soil at will.

In the event that the vine dies, the pan will come right up and we can spread the gravel over the bare spot without a lot of trouble.

Here is the entire area to be filled in with gravel. Since vehicles will be driving on the area, we paid a little extra for industrial strength weed barrier. I thought that the leveling out of this area was a lot of work...

...and then the gravel was delivered! It doesn't look that big from this photo, but this pile is actually 5 tons of rocks!

We actually ended up needing another 3 tons to finish up the empty spot and level out the rest!

It was sooooo much work moving rock, I'll be happy if I never do it again! On the plus side, moving mulch and garden dirt seems like a treat now 😄

Here is the shed put together and in place.

And the honeysuckle starting to leaf out.

And here is the finished result - so much nicer looking and functional! My husband wants to put in a decorative metal wall along the side, but that's a next year (or so) project 😉

S'more Fake Bakes

The puffs on the tray and in the bowl are leftover bits of spray foam insulation that I painted in beige, drizzled with dark brown and sprinkled cinnamon on top (held in place with spray adhesive). The whipped cream is lightweight spackle applied with an icing bag and the marshmallows/ bits of chocolate are clay. This post will show you more ideas for leftover spay foam insulation.

The macaroons are clay made with this silicone mold and painted with acrylic and the drink was made like this.

These cupcakes were a Dezicakes purchase, you can find their store here.

If you want to try making your own faux cupcakes, this tutorial will help.

The chocolate bars are clay that was pressed into silicone candy molds and painted with acrylic. For the large bars I used this mold and for the small bar I made my own mold like this.

The gram crackers are clay rolled out and cut into shape with cookie cutters. I used a clay scoring tool to add the line and dot details, then applied spray adhesive and cinnamon.

The marshmallows are hand molded clay that I painted in white. Some I put onto the ends of sticks while the rest I tucked into a jar.

These cupcakes I made myself using the same process in the linked tutorial above. The s'more sandwiches were made with faux gram crackers (cut out like the gram crackers above, but with a fancy edge cookie cutter) that I pressed together with lightweight spackle and acrylic paint in between.
